My husband, Tim and I, have found that most of our thoughts, feelings and emotions have a certain unconscious spin to them– in which they either turn clockwise or counterclockwise.

Over time, we have noticed that most problem states or negative emotions seem to be spinning one direction, while positive states and emotions spin another direction. If you take a negative emotion, and reverse the direction of the spin, the negativity of the emotion will disappear. If you take a positive feeling and spin it faster and faster in the same direction, it will intensify the positive nature of the feeling.

It makes sense from a quantum perspective that spin is so deeply woven into our consciousness and culture. According to quantum mechanics, the entire nature of our universe is based on spin. Hence, spin is an intrinsic property of all elementary particles such as quarks, leptons and bosons– which are the basic building blocks of our universe. 1

Just as the earth rotates around the sun, and the moon circles around the earth, our thoughts feelings, and actions have a certain spin quality to them as well. The idea of “spin” or “circular movement” is deeply rooted into our consciousness and how we process information. For example, you can hear how people represent spin in their language patterns. How many times have you heard someone say…

• I have this idea that has been going round and round in my head.

• I keep talking in circles about this problem.

• Let’s put a new spin on that idea.

• I keep looping around on what I should do next.

• I’m all wound up.

• I keep spinning this idea in my head.

• I need to go unwind, and have a glass of wine.

• This is a terrible cycle that we’ve been in.

• The economy is spiraling downward.

Moreover, you can hear a lot of talk about spin in the media and with politics. How many times have you heard a news commentator talking about the “spin machine”, or the most recent spin of the day, or how some poor politician is in need of a spin-doctor.

Not only can you hear spin metaphors in people’s language patterns, you can also see the “spin” in their non-verbal behavior and gestures. All you have to do is watch someone for a while, and you’ll begin to notice how often they make circular movements with their hands and fingers while they are talking. You will also see them making micro-circular movements with their heads, their eyes and their bodies.

Mine and Tim’s fascination with spin began in the Spring of 2008… It all started with a simple little headache. It was a sunny morning, and I had a headache on the right side of my head. I asked Tim if he could do something to make it better. So Tim reached over to the right side of my head and mimicked the motion of pulling the headache from the outside of my head. He then asked me to represent the headache in a holographical 3-dimensional image about two feet away from me, and to explain what it looked like.

The very first thing I noticed was that it looked like a light reddish-pinkish brain, and it was turning clockwise in a sideways motion. So Tim casually said to me, “Why don’t you just spin the headache counterclockwise until it disappears!”

It was kind of funny because he twirled his fingers around in circles as he was saying this. And then he disappeared into the other room. I think he must have gone to check email or something like that.

Anyway, I went ahead and did what he said and spun the image counterclockwise, and my headache disappeared. I must admit, I was pretty surprised at how quickly it went away. So I immediately began doing this process with all of my clients, and got some incredible results. Tim started doing it with all of his clients, and he was also getting good results. It seemed that the more we did this with our clients, the more we were able to fine-tune the process. And before I knew it, we had developed several different processes and techniques involving the concepts of quantum spin networks, holographic consciousness, submodality shifts in awareness, and the energy of our mind.

When working with someone, one of the several techniques that we have been doing is to have the client identify an unpleasant feeling, image, or voice and place it several feet outside of them in the form of a 3-dimensional holographic image. We then ask the client which way is the image turning. Whenever we ask someone this, they almost always say clockwise or counterclockwise. Rarely does anyone say that the image has “no spin” to it all.

We then ask the client to spin the image in the opposite direction of how they originally saw the image, and to spin the image so fast and hard that it explodes and disappears back into the universe. It’s as if a big giant vacuum comes in and sucks it up. And then a special “gift” will appear inside of the newly created empty space. The gift often serves as a powerful healing resource for the client, and has profound meaning for them. Once the client gets the gift, we then have them bring the healing essence of it back into their heart or somewhere in their body.

Over time, we have noticed a pattern to the types of metaphorical gifts the client’s receive, the color of the gifts, the shape of the gifts and the overall quality of the gifts. Usually the gift appears to be some kind of an archetypical metaphor that has special meaning to the client such as a diamond, a treasure box or a rose.

What are these gifts and where do they come from… In NLP terms they might be understood as coming from the unconscious mind of the client, and often serve as positive resource for the person. Whereas, from a Jungian psychology perspective– they might be understood as metaphorical archetypes that have a deep and profound meaning for the client. (2)

Carl Jung put forward the idea of a collective unconscious to which all humans have access to. He described this collective unconscious as a vast reservoir of archetypical images formed throughout the history and development of mankind. Although these archetypal images are common to humanity, the significance of a particular archetype to the individual person is specific: the archetype can often appear as a healing symbol or a metaphor such as a flower, a shining star, or a golden pathway– which is exactly what the person needs at that moment in their life. Tuning into the collective unconscious and gaining access to the archetypes that are relevant to a person, can be a life transforming experience. So now we ask people to look for these metaphorical archetypes as an intrinsic part of the Dynamic Spin Release™ process. (3) (4)

We have developed several new techniques and/or variations of the aforementioned process. We’ve been having a lot of fun with this, and our clients seem to love doing it. Just yesterday, I had a client ask me if it was all right to spin a bad feeling that she was having, “counter clockwise”.

My “inner scientist” became curious as to why this process works so well. So I started reading about quantum spin and the biophysics of the brain. Through my research, I discovered there are some well published scientists (Hameroff and Penrose, 1996) who believe that every thought, feeling, and emotion we have consists of different quantum states that are mediated through quantum spin and space time geometry. (5) (6)

I became excited when I read this because it offers an explanation as to why we’ve been getting such positive results with the Dynamic Spin Release™ process from a theoretical physics perspective. Whether or not these theories are 100% accurate, they support the fact that DSR is a practical way for “releasing” one’s negative energy, feelings, emotions and beliefs. It is also a nice and easy way to work with the energy of the mind, and the holographic nature of our consciousness (Germine, 2008). (7)

The whole idea of spinning one’s problems away, is an ancient one… that dates back to the 12th century Sufi tradition of Sufi Spinning– which is a trance like dance ritual that is still practiced today by the Whirling Dervishes. The Whirling Dervish is a mystical dancer who twirls and spins in a precise rhythm, which is representative of the earth revolving on its axis while orbiting the sun.

The purpose of the spinning dance ritual is for the dervish to be emptied of all negative thoughts, and to move into spiritual ecstasy thorough this sacred form of spinning. Interestingly, the word dervish is Persian and literally means, one who opens the doors. (8) (9)

Throughout history, dervishes have been known as sources of wisdom, medicine, poetry and enlightenment. The great poet, Rumi, practiced, the tradition of Sufi Spinning, and most of his poetry was inspired through this mystical form of dancing.

Moreover, Richard Bandler, the co-developer of NLP, also created a hypnotic spinning process– which he calls the “Spin Technique” or the “Reverse Spin Process”. Bandler has been spinning negative feelings into positive feelings for several years, and has been getting good results too. (10)

In essence, I guess you could say that spin has been around for a long time, and is probably here to stay… given how electrons spin around the nucleus of an atom, the planets in our solar system revolve around the sun, the earth twirls on its axis, and the dervishes spin in ecstasy. Dynamic Spin Release™ seems to be a good thing too.

Little girl spins away her stress, and receives a magical gift from her future self!

The following article was written by Sharon Gonzales, who is only 10-years old. Here is her story written in her own words…

Hey this is Sharon again, This time I want to talk to you about friends. Have you ever had a problem with your Friends? Have you ever realized that they are not really your friends??

Well I had a experience like that, I use to have a friend that I thought was the best friend ever, and then we got into a stressful situation and I realized that she was not a good friend and that she was just using me.

After that Every time I looked at her I felt like throwing-Up!!. Then my parents realized that I kept talking bad about her. So my parents decided to help me use the Dynamic Spin Release to take the bad vibe out of me.

First I was like “Thank God we are taking this out of my brain” and then I started feeling a lot of nervousness. During the process my parents ask me to think about the bad vibe and to notice where I felt it in my body and what it looked like, and it was something hard for me to describe, but then it turned out to be a shape that is similar to the cells in our body. I then realized that I was sitting hunched back, because I also felt the bad vibe in in my back!

After the spinning my parents ask me about the gift I received, and I was able to see myself in the future getting a scholarship for Law School. Later on I sent a message to Sharon in the Future telling her that “You are a smart Girl, no body is Smarter than you and you will be the best lawyer ever” and I started to cry like a baby and hugged my parents because I felt so grateful to take that feeling out of me, and now I do not have any hunchback and I am standing straight !!!

In conclusion I feel so Happy that all the bad feelings went away thanks to The Dynamic Spin Release.

Love !! Sharon.

______________________________________________________________

What are these gifts Sharon received and where do they come from? – A brief commentary by Kris Hallbom

When doing Dynamic Spin Release™, one of the several techniques that we have developed is to have the person identify an unpleasant feeling, image, or voice and place it several feet outside of them in the form of a 3-dimensional holographic image. In Sharon’s case, it was a really bad feeling that had to do with the falling out she had with her best friend. (1)

We then ask the person which way is the image turning. Whenever we ask someone this, they almost always say clockwise or counterclockwise. Rarely does anyone say that the image has “no spin” to it all.

We then ask the person to spin the image in the opposite direction of how they originally saw the image, and to spin the image so fast and hard that it explodes and disappears back into the universe. It’s as if a big giant vacuum comes in and sucks it up. And then a special “gift” will appear inside of the newly created empty space. The gift often serves as a powerful healing resource for the person doing the spinning, and has profound meaning for them. In Sharon’s case, the gift was an image of her future self going to Law School, which was a powerful gift for her because it made her feel really smart. Once the person gets the gift, we then have them bring the healing essence of it back into their heart or somewhere in their body. (2)

What are these gifts and where do they come from? In NLP terms they might be understood as coming from the unconscious mind of the client, and from a Jungian psychology perspective; they might be understood as metaphorical archetypes. Carl Jung put forward the idea of a Collective Unconscious to which all humans have access. He described this Collective Unconscious as a vast reservoir of archetypical images formed throughout the history and development of mankind. (3)

Although these archetypal images are common to humanity, the significance of a particular archetype to the individual person is specific: thus, the archetype can often appear as a healing symbol or metaphor such as a flower, a shining star, or a wise old sage– which is exactly what the person needs at that moment in their life. So now we ask people to look for these metaphorical archetypes as an intrinsic part of the Dynamic Spin Release™ process. (4) (5)

Over time, we have noticed a pattern to the types of metaphorical gifts the person’s receive, the color of the gifts, the shape of the gifts and the overall quality of the gifts. Usually the gift appears to be some kind of an archetypical metaphor that has special meaning to the client such as a diamond, a treasure box or a fairy princess. So now we ask people to look for these metaphorical gifts as an intrinsic part of the process.

We have developed several new techniques and/or variations of the aforementioned process. We’ve been having a lot of fun with this, and people seem to love doing it, especially children!

Using DSR to release critical voices and limiting beliefs

I worked with a talented 32-year old man to help him release an unconscious critical voice, that was holding him back in his life. His name was Oscar and he was the owner of a successful business consulting company. Oscar was an interesting case indeed, because everything looked “right” about him. He had created the perfect career for himself, he married the perfect wife, and he was smart as a whip.

So what was his problem?

Oscar had an inner critical voice that traveled everywhere with him. In his mind, he constantly heard the words, “You better not be wrong, or else you’ll lose everything and then you’ll be all alone”.

Now take a moment and try on Oscar’s critical voice, by saying the above statement and notice how it makes you feel…

Most people experience a sense of dread when they say the above statement, which is exactly what Oscar felt all of the time. Hence, Oscar’s biggest problem was that he was always stressed out and worried about saying or doing the wrong thing, and he could never relax. He also had a habit of second guessing himself, because he was so terrified of getting it wrong.

Interestingly, it was also this same voice that motivated Oscar to do well in life. Because he was so afraid of doing the wrong thing, he tried to do everything right. From an outsider’s perspective, Oscar appeared to have a charmingly perfect life. However, on the inside he felt tightly wound up like a ball of rope– and he felt helpless and all alone. He didn’t want anyone to know what was going on, for fear they might think something was wrong with him.

What is an Unconscious Critical Voice?

An unconscious critical voice is an inner voice that was heard at some point in a person’s childhood, and stays with the person throughout his or her life. Whenever you ask someone if they have an inner critic or a critical voice that follows them around, most people will emphatically say, “Yes!”

What’s even more interesting is if you ask the person to point to the location of their critical voice, they’ll know right where it is! And more often than not, the critical voice will be located either behind their head or it’ll be located on the left or right side of their head. In Oscar’s case, his critical voice was located behind his left ear.

Your Critical Voices are Directly Connected with Your Limiting Beliefs

Another interesting aspect about critical voices is not only do they say damaging things to the person like, “You’re stupid” or “That was a dumb thing to say”… they can also serve as a limiting belief.

In Oscar’s case, it turned out that his unconscious critical voice was a cultural limiting belief that came from events in his childhood. Oscar’s parents immigrated to the United States from El Salvador in 1980, due to the onset of the Salvadoran Civil War. Several of their friends and neighbors had been killed for saying or doing the “wrong” thing, which is why they left the country.

As a child, Oscar parent’s often told him that it was important to work really hard in life and to never make any mistakes. This belief was drilled into Oscar from an early age, because his parents had seen so many of their friends executed during the war for doing or saying the wrong thing. Oscar then generalized this belief to include his work life, his personal life and his overall safety. As a result, he had a huge fear of saying or doing the wrong thing.

So, Oscar kept repeating statements in his mind like, “You better not be wrong, or you’ll lose everything, and then you’ll be all alone.” Over time, this belief transformed into an unconscious critical voice that followed him everywhere. The unconscious positive purpose of the critical voice was literally to protect him and keep him safe by doing and saying the right thing. Moreover, this critical voice represented all of the heinous and violent crimes that happened in El Salvador during the Civil War.

Hence, it was, in a sense, a Cultural Limiting Belief…

Cultural Limiting Beliefs and How to Change Them

My husband Tim and I have identified a lot of cultural limiting beliefs in the private work that we do, especially with clients who have parents or grandparents who immigrated from other violent and war infested countries. Whenever I work with someone on their most core issues, I ask them a lot of questions about the history of their family– because more often than not, a person’s core issue will go back a couple of generations. 1

When I first started working with Oscar, he told me early on in the session that “he had this critical voice going on all the time” and it really stressed him out. I asked him where the critical voice was located, and he said it was behind his left ear. I then asked him to literally pull the voice away from him– and place it about six feet in front of him, so that he could see it floating in space.

I asked Oscar, “Whose voice is it, and what do you see in the space where you placed the voice?”

“This is really strange,” he replied. “I see a man’s index finger pointing at me and it’s telling me that I better not get it wrong!”

I asked Oscar who the “mysterious pointing finger” belonged to, and he immediately said that it was his grandfather’s finger! I then asked him if there was anyone else located behind his grandfather, and he replied, “Yes, I can see a whole ocean of people standing behind him, and they’re all the people who were killed during the Salvadoran Civil War.”

The Healing Power of Positive Intention

It became clear to Oscar in that moment during the session that the positive intent of his inner critic was all about keeping him safe. It was literally to avoid getting killed. Oscar got emotional at this point during the session, because he realized that not only was the voice trying to keep him safe and protect him, but it was also helping him to stay connected with his family and his Salvadorian roots. I asked Oscar to honor and acknowledge all the feelings of love and connection that he had for his family and the Salvadorian culture, as a whole.

Afterwards, he told me how incredibly good it felt to do that, because his parents had taught him to forget where he came from, and to only think of himself as an American. So not only was the voice and cultural belief trying to keep Oscar safe, it was also providing an unconscious way for him to stay connected with his grandfather, and all the generations before him.

The next thing I did was to ask Oscar to fill the space behind his left ear (where the critical voice had been) with golden light, so that the space would no longer be empty. In his pioneering work with critical voices, Tim Hallbom has found that it’s not ecological to leave a void when you remove a person’s critical voice, because sometimes another voice will take its place. Keep in mind that the critical voice has occupied its location in space for a number of years, and habit alone can prompt the unconscious mind to refill it.

This idea of filling in the void with something more positive is ancient knowledge indeed… At some point in his life, Jesus said that you can’t cast out a demon, unless you fill the void that it’s been occupying with the Holy Spirit– otherwise the demon will go into the desert and bring back seven more demons to occupy the original void. Since we had just removed the critical voice from the space behind Oscar’s left ear, it made sense that we should replace it with something more positive and uplifting. So I chose a visual modality such as golden light, because I didn’t want another dissociated voice to return.2

Dynamic Spin Release and the Energy of the Mind

I then asked Oscar to think about all the stress and anxiety that he felt whenever he thought about the critical voice and the cultural limiting belief– and then to notice where he felt all of the negative feelings in his body that were associated with those things.

“Whenever I think about that critical voice and belief, I get a really tight feeling in my throat,” he said. I then told him to imagine pulling the tight feeling out of his throat and to place it out front of him so that he could see it floating in space. As soon as he could see the image of the tight feeling in his throat, I asked him what it looked like.

Oscar replied, “I see an image of a gooey black blob with pointed edges around it, and it’s turning clockwise.”

I told him that is was great that he could see which way it was turning, and I continued to say, “Now, go ahead and spin the image of the black blob counterclockwise as fast as you can, until it explodes into a bunch of little particles floating in space. As soon as this happens, you’ll see a big cosmic vacuum come in and suck away all the particles… and a symbolic gift will instantly appear where the particles were. Now tell me, what kind of a gift do you see in front of you?”

Oscar continued to spin the black blob faster and faster with his mind’s eye, until it exploded into a bunch of tiny particles. As soon as the particles were gone, he told me that he saw a golden pocket watch. 3

“What does the pocket watch mean to you, and what healing message does it have for you?” I asked.

“The pocket watch means that it is my time to have the life I want, which means being able to finally relax and enjoy all the success that comes my way,” he said in a relaxed voice tone. “I also feel like the pocket watch belongs to my grandfather, and seeing it makes me feel more loving and connected with him,” he added.

I then told him, “Good, that is a nice metaphorical gift for you right now in your life… Now, go ahead and send the golden pocket watch out on a mission to the outer rims of the universe to collect all of the healing energy and wisdom throughout the universe, and throughout all of space and time,” I continued in a hypnotic voice tone.

“When the pocket watch returns, it will bring you back another gift or it will transform into another healing metaphor that is special to you. Remember that time is simultaneous, and these gifts come back very quickly. So, look in front of you right now, and tell me what your new gift is?” I asked.

“Well the pocket watch can back with a bright shining star,” he said with a smile on his face and a look of surprise. “Ahhhh, a bright shining star, what a great gift!” I said in a confirming tone.

“What is the meaning of your gift,” I asked, and Oscar emphatically replied, “It means that I can shine now and I’m safe to be who I am! It’s my time to shine, and I can relax and enjoy my success!”

In that moment, I noticed the muscle tonus in Oscar’s face soften up and his whole body completely relaxed. Which was way different from the tightly wound posture that I had seen so many times before. I asked him to take a good look at the golden pocket watch and the bright shining star, and to add in some more color or sparkles to the images. He chose golden-white light, and surrounded the pocket watch and the shining star with the image of the light.

“Now go ahead and reach your hands out in front of you,” I said, “and imagine the pocket watch and the shining star, and the golden-white light floating back into your hands. As soon as they’re in your hands, you can bring all of that healing energy into your body, letting the essence of the pocket watch, the shining star, and the golden white light float into every cell in your body–though out all of your DNA, and your entire energetic being.”

As I was saying this, he pulled his hands up towards where the critical voice had been and then he imagined bringing all of it in. Shortly there after, he fell into a deep trance. I continued to do a fifteen minute hypnotic trance with him, in which I tied together all of the healing metaphors from his gifts, with his overall goal of being able to completely relax and enjoy all the success that he had achieved at such a young age. 4

When he came out of his trance, he looked really different from when he first walked into my office. He literally looked like he had let go of his critical voice and the cultural belief that had accompanied it. His body posture was more relaxed and he seemed totally comfortable in his body.

A few days later I received the following email from Oscar, and he told me that his life had totally changed as a result of the work that we did….

Kris-

I am floored at the shift that I have made. It’s been immense, immediate and life changing. I am so happy and grateful to you for taking the time to walk me through the most complex pattern I’d ever encountered.

My wife and I went to play golf yesterday and it would normally be tough, with many wrongs, but not this time! It was great! No pressure, just fun and my bright star was shining all the way through!

I am eternally indebted to you for your generosity. ~ Oscar

How to quickly release physical pain using DSR

I recently called my assistant on the phone about something work related, and she told me that she had just been stung by a bee on the back of her neck. She said she was in a lot of pain and was having a hard time focusing on work.

I asked her if I could try doing Dynamic Spin Release™ to help her relieve the pain, and she agreed to let me work with her. The first thing I asked her to do was to imagine pulling all the pain out of her neck and to place it out front of her so that she could see it floating in space.

As soon as she could see the image of the pain, I asked her what it looked like. She said that it looked like a ball of red and black energy and that it was vibrating. I asked her which way the image was spinning and she said that it was turning in a clockwise direction.

I continued to say, “Now, go ahead and spin the image of the pain counterclockwise as fast as you can, until it explodes into a bunch of little particles floating in space. As soon as this happens, you’ll see a big cosmic vacuum come in and suck away all the particles… and a symbolic gift or healing resource will instantly appear where the particles were. Now tell me, what kind of a gift do you see in front of you?” I asked.

She said, “A flower, I see a flower. Actually, it’s lavender– which is really healing and soothing for me. I really like my gift!”

Since she liked her gift so much, I asked her to reach her hands out in front of her, and visualize the lavender floating into her palms.

As soon as the image of the healing flower was in her hands, I then asked her to bring her hands up to her neck where the sting occurred… and to let the healing properties of the lavender flow through her neck, throughout her entire body, through every cell, through her DNA and through her energetic being.

“Wow! The pain is gone, the pain is gone,” she said with delight. “I can’t believe how fast that worked, I don’t feel the pain anymore. It’s completely gone!”

The above process is one of many DSR techniques that I’ve co-developed with Tim Hallbom. Here’s a detailed description of the process, and how to do it with yourself or others:

Discovering the Gift™ –

A Dynamic Spin Release™ Technique for dealing with negative thinking and emotions, and physical pain.

1. Identify an unpleasant thought, feeling, emotion or physical symptom that keeps you from having what you want.

2. Notice the physical sensations and/or visual images associated with the problem.

3. Imagine removing the problem and placing it outside of you, where you can see it floating in the space in front of you in the form of an image or a symbol.

4. Determine which way the image is spinning. Is it spinning clockwise or counter-clockwise? If it appears motionless then ask, “If it was spinning, which direction would it be spinning in?”

5. Reverse the direction of the spin, and get it going faster and faster until the image explodes and disappears– and a new healing image or gift appears in the space out in front of you.

6. Identify the positive message from the gift. How is it meaningful for you?

7. Bring the gift back into your body, and notice all your new feelings and understandings.

8. Now look out into your future, and think about how your gift will positively influence your life.

Patterns in Nature Translated to Human Behavior

by Kris Hallbom

We can learn so much about ourselves from observing the lives of cells, the growth of trees, the waves in the ocean, and other universal patterns of growth and self-creation. Nature is our greatest teacher. Since human beings are a part of nature, and our universe is about 13.7 billion years old, it seems obvious there must be some kind of connection between the patterns that exits outside of ourselves–and the unconscious patterns that reside within us.

For the last 25 years I have been observing nature and studying the laws of our universe with the same question in mind. “How is our inner reality directly related to our outer reality, and how do the two effect one another?” This has led me on a long journey that has included studying cybernetics, the sciences of complexity, autopoiesis, chaos theory, morphogenetic fields, quantum mechanics and string theory; coupled with NLP and many other psychological and spiritual models. Through this ongoing research and many long winded discussions with my husband Tim Hallbom– we have developed a model to help you consciously create what you want in life called the Universal Cycles of Change.

The Universal Cycles of Change are an ongoing process that’s been happening since the beginning of time, or for about 13 billion years. We have observed seven universal cycles of change that occur in all living systems such as plants, trees, stars, cells and animals. You can also see these same cycles occurring in most non-living systems such as cars, computers, cell phones and the economy.

The Universal Cycles of Change can also be found within all aspects of human life and behavior. They happen in marriages, in business, with health, with families, with various states of mind and so on. We go through these cycles everyday and every year of our life. Being aware of these cycles can help you to consciously create the kinds of life experiences that you want, and to bring forth the reality of your choice. The people who do well in life are naturally attuned to these cycles of change.

Below is a brief description of the seven Universal Cycles of Change that we have identified. (A more detailed description of these cycles is provided later in the article.)

Creation-This cycle is about new beginnings. All systems must have a starting point of some kind.

Growth – When a living system begins to grow and develop, it becomes “self organizing”.

Complexity to Maturity – As a system begins to take shape and form through continued growth, it becomes more complex to the point where it reaches what we call a “steady state”. A system operates at its best when it is in a steady state.

Turbulence - When the system becomes too complex in its growth, problems begin to develop and turbulence sets in. Turbulence is considered feedback from the environment that the system’s complex state can no longer be supported. Something has to shift for it to go to the next level of creation and growth. If this shift “does not” occur, then chaos will set in.

Chaos - This is when the system begins to fall apart because it has become too complex, and chaos sets it. The system can no longer hold it all together.

Releasing and Dropping Off – Once chaos has set in, there must be some kind of a release or dropping off to bring the system back into balance.

Meditation and Dormancy – This is the final cycle in which the system regains its balance, which will allow it to recycle back up into Creation. The system now has less mass, yet more energy because it contains all the learnings from the previous cycles.

Everything in our universe evolves and grows, and has been doing so for billions of years. Part of this natural evolutionary process includes going through different states of change. Let’s take a tree for example, since its the easiest metaphor I’ve found to describe the Universal Cycles of Change.

The first cycle that a tree goes through is that of creation, which happens when a seed gets planted. Then the tree grows– given that it has been provided with enough water and sunshine to grow. Over time the tree reaches a steady state of maturity in which all of its leaves have blossomed with complete beauty. Then the Autumn season sets in, the leaves begin to change color. They turn brown and drop off to the ground. After this happens, the tree stands in dormancy without any leaves. But then Spring comes around, the tree sprouts new leaves and the whole process of Creation happens again.

Because all living systems get too complex in their growth and development, they must have some kind of a dropping off or release to regain their balance. Trees do this all the time with their leaves. We can learn a lot by modelling trees. Have you ever been walking by a tree and its leaves are falling off. And all of a sudden you hear the tree crying out, “Pleeeease, don’t let my leaves fall off!”

This never happens. The tree has mastered the art of dropping off and recycling back up to Creation. Snakes are the same way when they shed their skin. I have never known of a snake to resist the process. Even most computers have trash bins to drop off the excess information that can slow down their hard drive, which thus allows for the computer to operate more quickly and creatively.

Interestingly, there is only one living system that does not allow itself to naturally go through this 13 billion year old process of universal change. This same system allows itself to stay stuck in turbulence and chaos for extended periods of time. This same system often resists dropping off what needs to be dropped off. Can you guess which system it is?

Human beings, of course.

People represent the only living system that will allow themselves to stay stuck in turbulence and chaos. They are the only living system that will not drop off and release whatever needs to be dropped off in their life. We see this resistance happening a lot in relationships, career and health.

For example, my husband Tim, and I were teaching a class in Australia last year, when a man in the group shared an amazing realization that he had about the Universal Cycles of Change and how they related to him. This man had a teenage daughter who he had been unable to communicate with for several years. After learning about the Universal Cycles of Change, he raised his hand and said,

“I finally understand why I have been having so many problems with my 17 year old daughter. In my mind I still think of her as a little child. I am now realizing that I need to “drop off” my perception of her as a child and start treating her like a young adult. It makes total sense to me why there has been so much turbulence and chaos in our relationship over the last couple of years.”

Another woman who attended our training in London, England, told me about an amazing experience that she had with her children and the Universal Cycles of Change model. “Kris, I just have to tell you about the funniest thing that happened to me last night. After I learned about your Universal Cycles of Change model, I made the decision that I needed to “drop off” the co-dependent relationship that I have with my five adult children,” she said with excitement.

“Even though my children are grown up, they are all so needy. I felt like my life was all about them and there was no room for me. On my drive home last night, I set the intent to release the co-dependence that has been keeping me enmeshed with my children for so many years. After I got home, all ‘chaos’ broke loose. One by one, each child phoned me with some major crisis. One of my children’s car broke down, the other had just broken up with a boyfriend, another was having a bad day and so on. The phone just kept ringing off the hook with their problems. I told each child one by one that they were responsible for themselves from now on and that they will need to solve their own problems,” she said.

At this point in the story, she was glowing as she continued to say,

“I just wanted to tell you that today is the beginning of the rest of my life. I am no longer co-dependent with my children and I can have my life back! I am going to go back to school and I am also going to start painting again, and doing the kinds of things that make me happy. I am going to start living my life for me now, instead of for everyone else”.

So often people are afraid to make changes, because they are worried about throwing their lives into turbulence and chaos. In the case of the English women, she was worried that her grown children would feel resentment towards her if she were not always fully present for them. Instead of being present for her children, she ended up resenting them because she wasn’t getting to live the life she wanted. Once she released her children from the co-dependent bonds of enmeshment, she was able to evolve into a new way of interacting with her children. And in doing so, she found that she could be more present for her children because she felt more spiritually fulfilled in her life.

As mentioned earlier, the Universal Cycles of Change can influence every area in your life. The primary life areas that they affect the most are:

* Romance and Love
* Career
* Health
* Family
* Money Matters
* Friends
* Spirituality
* Your Present State of Mind

When you assess each area of your life, which Universal Cycle of Change are you experiencing in that context? If any of your areas are in turbulence or chaos, you may want to ask yourself,

“What are some things that I need to drop off and release so that I can bring my life back into balance?”

It doesn’t always have to be a dramatic dropping off. You can drop off something as simple as reading the morning newspaper and drinking diet coke everyday. Some other examples of things that may need to be dropped off are: behaviors, beliefs, attitudes, ways of thinking, perceptions, habits, jobs and relationships. Other specific examples might include: smoking, drinking too much alcohol, weight, television, coffee, unclear boundaries, frenetic busyness, old relationships that need to be updated, a troublesome employee, a toxic friendship, clutter, disorganization, grudges, anger, jealousy, unnecessary debt and unfinished business with people.

Here is a more detailed description of the 7 Universal Cycles of Change to help you identify which cycle you might be in:

Creation—This cycle is about new beginnings. Everything has a starting point, and typically that point begins with an idea, an action, or a blueprint. Some examples of this include starting a business, having a baby, investing in your first stock or fund, creating an idea for a book or a painting, building your first house, getting married, buying a new car, planting the seeds for a vegetable garden, or the Big Bang (the beginning of our universe as we know it).

Growth—When a system begins to grow and develop, it also becomes “self organizing.” What this means is that the initial creation begins to take shape or form. New patterns of behavior start to develop, and the system self–organizes itself around the original creation. For example, a new business develops a wonderful marketing plan, the stock that you’ve invested in begins to rise in price, the small tree that you’ve planted shows signs of growth, you install fancy hubcaps and new seat covers in your car, or your child speaks its first words and takes her first steps.

Complexity to Maturity — As a system begins to take shape and form through continued growth, it becomes more complex to the point where it reaches a “steady state.” A system operates at its best when it is in a steady state. Some examples of a steady state are when things are going exceptionally well in your job, when an athlete enters into the zone, when the tree that you have planted is sprouting beautiful green leaves, when your marriage is going incredibly well, the car that you bought is running great, the stock that you have invested in has made a big jump in the right direction, or when you’re feeling good about yourself and everything in your life.

Turbulence–Feedback — When the system becomes too complex in its growth and development, problems begin to develop and turbulence sets is. Turbulence is considered feedback from the environment that the system’s complex state can no longer be supported—and that something has to be reorganized, changed, or dropped off. For example, you may have hired someone to work for you and that person isn’t working out; you may start noticing some serious communication problems in your marriage that are effecting your individual health and well–being; the leaves on the tree that you planted begin to change color; you may have invested in a stock and it begins to drop; you develop a minor physical symptom that is distracting; you notice signs of depression or dissatisfaction in your life, or your car starts making funny little sounds.

Chaos — This is when the system completely falls apart and chaos sets in. For example, the leaves on the tree turn brown and shrivel up; the troublesome employee acts out to the point where the overall welfare of the business is threatened; the stock that you bought takes a huge drop; your marriage is completely falling apart; you get seriously ill; or the funny sound that your car was making turns into a loud choking sound and grey–blue smoke starts blowing out the tail pipe.

Dropping Off, Releasing and Reorganizing — Sometimes life becomes so complex that chaos sets in and you have to drop off something to help the system regain its overall balance. For example, when the snake sheds its skin or the leaves drop off the tree—these are considered to be droppings off. Even having to replace a part on your car is a form of releasing or a form of reorganization. In order to move forward through a difficult life challenge you often need to let go of a limiting belief, a dysfunctional relationship, change a behavior, or reorganize how you view the world; thus making the space in your life to create something wonderfully new. All life forms in this universe such as trees, snakes, and even stars allow for this natural dropping off cycle to occur; as well as nonliving forms such as computers with animated trash bins. The purpose of the trash bin is to get rid of extra information on the hard drive because it takes up too much space. Human beings are the only ones that resist these natural cycles of change. Keep in mind that when you don’t allow yourself to drop off whatever needs to be released in your life, you are essentially going against several billions years of evolution. It’s not natural to hang on to those things or situations that are no longer serving you.

Meditation and Dormancy — The way a system regains its balance is to drop something off. Then it can rejuvenate itself during the dormancy phase, thus allowing itself to recycle back up to a new evolutionary level of Creation. Just as the tree stands without leaves in the brisk cold winter, we sometimes need to go into a place of meditation and inner silence. It might be uncomfortable for a while, but it can be very healing to quiet one’s mind or to lay low for a while. Before you can move forward, you need to give yourself plenty of being time to renew and rejuvenate. Once you’ve done this, you can become creative again. You will have dropped off what was holding you back. Yet you’ll still have all the knowledge and wisdom that was gained from the whole experience. This sets the tone for a whole new cycle of Creativity and Growth.

My husband, Tim, and I have found that it is useful for people to look at the different areas of their life, and to identify where they are in the Universal Cycles of Change. For example, there was a woman attending one of our trainings in Dallas, Texas last year, who took herself through the Universal Cycles of Change model. In doing so, she discovered that there were three primary areas in her life that were in total chaos. These areas included her job, her marriage, and her health. She had been very unhappy in her marriage for over 10 years and tried everything possible to make it work. She and her husband hadn’t slept in the same bedroom for over five years. She had also become extremely unhappy with her job, and was 40 pounds overweight. She decided that she needed to drop off her marriage, her job, and the extra 40 pounds of weight that she was carrying.

This same woman reappeared four months later at another training of ours in Omaha, Nebraska. She had lost 32 pounds and looked fantastic. I asked her how her life was going. She said that she had asked her husband for a divorce and was in the middle of transitioning out of her old job, and she was starting a new business. She had also released some of her limiting beliefs around money, which had given her the courage to start a new business. She admitted that all of these changes had created some chaos in her life, yet she was happier than she had ever been and was looking forward to her new adventure.

We certainly don’t recommend dropping off a relationship or a job. This is a last resort. We always encourage our students and clients to start off by trying to drop off an attitude, a perception, or any behaviors and beliefs that are related to their overall disharmony. If dropping those things off doesn’t work, then perhaps they will need to drop off the relationship or job. Especially, when it’s highly dysfunctional, toxic or abusive. Fortunately, you can use Dynamic Spin Release or NLP as a resource to help someone transition through these Universal Cycles of Change.

In the case of the man who was having problems with his teenage daughter, it’s not like he could just “drop off” the relationship with his child. His only option was to reorganize who he was within the context of the relationship. As soon as he stopped treating her like a little girl, and started treating her like an adult, their relationship got better. The magic in what he did with his daughter can be found within the structure of his internal experience. He had an internal representation of her being a little girl. When he shifted that representation to her being an adult, then she started acting like an adult. By doing this, he was able to create an entirely new experience with his daughter.
What happened with the man and his daughter leads me back to the original question that I posed earlier in this article. “How is our inner reality directly related to our outer reality, and how do the two affect one another?”

Our outer reality is a reflection of our inner reality. What nature can do for us—is to serve as a perfect model for creating the life we want, as well as evolving to higher levels of personal and spiritual fulfillment. The answers to creating what we want in life can be found by becoming consciously aware of the Universal Cycles of Change and applying them to all the various life areas. There is no reason why we can’t harness the same kind of creative potential that exists within the seed of a plant or a star in our galaxy.

Barbara Walters was interviewing multi–billionaire Bill Gates, and asked him, “Now that you’re the richest man in the world and you can have anything you desire, what more could you possibly want?”

Gates replied, “To never stop creating and changing. Whatever I do today, will be considered history tomorrow. I have to make sure that I never stop creating, and that I am always changing.”

Spinning through the veil of consciousness and the power of your unconscious metaphors…

I was flying from San Francisco to Indianapolis to celebrate my father’s 70th birthday. I started feeling anxious as soon I walked onto the airplane. And by the time the plane took off, I was having a panic attack.

I couldn’t believe it. I have traveled to over 25 countries around the world, and I fly all the time. How could I be having a panic attack on this day, on this plane? Not to mention that I’m a NLP coach and hypnotherapist, and work with these kind of issues all the time.

Around 10 minutes into the flight, I looked down at my hands and they were chalk white. I had heard of people who were white knuckled flyers, and now I was one of those people! It occurred to me in that moment that I needed to take charge of the situation. Apparently, in the midst of my anxiety attack, I had forgotten who I am and what I do for a living.

I immediately thought about spinning the anxiety. But my only challenge was that I was sitting in a small space, and had someone sitting next to me. I didn’t want to draw any attention to myself, so I was going to have to be creative in how I worked with myself. Fortunately, I was sitting in an exit row and I had a little more seating room than usual.

The first thing I did was to identify where the anxiety was in my body– and it turned out to be in my head. So I envisioned all the anxious feelings and images floating out of my head, to the back of the seat that was directly in front of me. There was a blank TV screen on the seat, which ended up being the perfect place for me to examine the anxious feelings I was having––and all the unconscious images I had been visualizing during the flight.

The very first thing I saw was an image of a plane crashing and everyone dying. This image didn’t surprise me at all. “No wonder I had been panicking,” I sighed to myself.

It was the unconscious image in my mind that had been generating all the bad feelings associated with my panic attack. I next identified which direction the image of the plane crash was turning, and it was spinning clockwise. I drew a circle around the image with my minds eye, so I could see the clockwise motion of it better. I then reversed the spin direction of the image, and spun it counter clockwise as fast as I could until it transformed into a healing gift/metaphor.

The first metaphorical gift I got from my unconscious mind was the Wheel of Fortune from the game show, “Wheel of Fortune”. I smiled when I saw the wheel. Yet, I felt a little bit confused by it, because I didn’t understand what it meant. So I decided to spin the wheel again, just like they do on the game show to see what my next gift would be. I gently spun it in a counter clockwise motion with my mind’s eye, until the next image appeared to me. Suddenly, I begun to see an image fill in, and I was completely surprised by what I saw…. The image turned out to be the Dali Lama!

The Dali Lama, looked at me with a gentle smile on his face, and said, “Be at peace now, and relax.”

I could feel my whole body loosen up, and I immediately began to feel at ease upon hearing his kind words.

I was so delighted with the image of the Dali Lama and having so much fun, that I decided to do one more spin with my mind’s eye to see what would come up next. So, I carefully spun the Dali Lama in a counterclockwise motion, and waited for the next image to appear to me.

Once again, I was completely surprised by the image that I received from my other than conscious mind. It turned out to be my grandmother, who passed away when I was a little girl. I’ve always felt like she was my guardian angel. So this was a really special gift for me. Interestingly, she didn’t show up on the TV screen on the back of the airplane seat…

Instead, she was floating outside the window of the airplane. I was sitting in a window seat, and I looked to my right– and there she was– and she had a special message for me:

“Kristine, this is not your time. You are not going to die on this day, or in this airplane. You have a long life ahead of you. Now listen to what the Dali Lama said. Be at peace now, and relax,” she said with a gentle smile on her face.

I completely relaxed in that moment, and fell fast asleep. I slept through the entire flight, and was completely startled awake by the sound of the wheels hitting the ground at the Indianapolis International Airport. I looked outside the window, and the sun was setting in the most beautiful way.

As far as the images of the Dali Lama and my deceased grandmother are concerned… I’m not sure what to make of that. My scientific rational self would say:

“They were unconscious metaphors, generated by my mind to comfort me in that moment distress. This is what makes the most logical sense.”

However, there is a spiritual part of me that would like to think that, perhaps, my grandmother really did visit me from the other side.

I guess I’ll never know.

Since then, I have flown to Europe and Australia several times and I’m always completely at ease on the airplane and totally relaxed, even during severe turbulence. It’s easy for me to sleep through the bumps, and to have a total peace of mind.

Elia’s inspiring spin story… She used to hate Science class and now she likes it!

Note: The following story was written by Elia Gonzales, who is 13 years old and is in the 8th grade. Here is her story written in her own words…

This is my first experience with dynamic spin release. I used to hate science and I always got bad scores, but then I decided to try this new spinning activity with my dad.

What the Spin does is it takes the bad feelings away in my case it was science class– and then you take the bad feeling out of your body so you feel all better about it. This is what you do, when you have the bad feeling you have to find out where it is coming from inside your body, then you take it out of yourself and figure out how it spins. Then you spin it in the opposite way until you blow it up and a vacuum comes and takes it all away. Then you see a gift in the place where the bad feelings were, and in my case I saw an iPhone. After that you send it out to the universe for a gift, and then it comes back with another gift and in my case I got a white cloth.

My dad asked me what does white represents for me, for me white represents cleanness and the iPhone represents communication. Then my dad told me that probably what I need to do, is to talk more with my teacher.

After that I got a lot of emotions and I released them with some tears, and that made me feet better, relaxed and relieved.

The next day I woke up early and went to my science class, and for the first time in several months I started listening to what the teacher was saying and I realized that I like the subject of science I just didn’t like the way the teacher teaches it. From that day on I listened more to my teacher and I got better scores in science.

By the way I also got the real iPhone three weeks later!

Until Next Time,

What are these gifts Elia received and where do they come from? – A brief commentary by Kris Hallbom

When doing Dynamic Spin Release™, one of the several techniques that we have developed is to have the person identify an unpleasant feeling, image, or voice and place it several feet outside of them in the form of a 3-dimensional holographic image. In Elia’s case, it was an unpleasant feeling that had to do with her science class.

In Elia’s case, the gifts were an iPhone and a white cloth.

Although these archetypal images are common to humanity, the significance of a particular archetype to the individual person is specific: thus, the archetype can often appear as a healing symbol or metaphor such as a flower, a shining star, or a golden pathway– which is exactly what the person needs at that moment in their life.

Usually the gift appears to be some kind of an archetypical metaphor that has special meaning to the client such as a diamond, a treasure box or a rose. So now we ask people to look for these metaphorical gifts as an intrinsic part of the process.

We have developed several new techniques and/or variations of the aforementioned process. We’ve been having a lot of fun with this, and people seem to love doing it, especially children!

Every second you travel thousands of miles. In the time it takes you to read this sentence, you’ve already traveled more. Here’s the breakdown:

Planet Earth is spinning at 1,040 mph at the equator. At the same time, the Earth is circling around the sun at 67,000 mph. And the sun is spinning through our local star cluster at 45,000 mph.

Our local star cluster rides on the outer spiral arm of the Milky Way, which is spinning another 500,000 mph. The Milky Way is rotating through the Local Group of galaxies at 180,000 mph. And the Local Group is traveling and spinning through our universe at an estimated 540,000 mph.

Have You Ever Observed Just How Much Spin Takes Place In Our Lives?

Physical: Watch how a dog circles to lay down, how people twirl their hands and fingers as they talk, how wheels go round and round, how a child twirls in the spring, how a Ferris wheel spins to entertain, how water spirals down the drain, how balls spin in sports, and the list goes on.

Words: Our language is influenced by spin. We often say things such as: my head is spinning, this conversation is going in circles, I’m all wound up, I need to go unwind, let’s put a new spin on that, we will have to turn this around, I am in a downward spiral, let’s figure a way around that, and there is a turning of the seasons.

Science: There is spin in physics, elementary particles, composite particles, atoms, molecules, and magnetic forces. From quarks to leptons to bosons, there is a spin. Our planet spins in orbit, the solar system spins in the galaxy, the galaxy spins in the universe.

Note: The following story was written by Sharon Gonzales, who is only 10 years old and is in the 5th grade. Here is her story written in her own words…

I really love swimming so my dad signed my sister and I up for some classes. After two days I got very afraid because I thought I was the slowest in the class and the swim coach kept on yelling at me, so I wanted to give up. I told my parents how I felt and as I was talking I started crying because I knew it wasn’t me, it was just this part of my brain that was telling me that I wasn’t a good swimmer. But I knew deep down I was a good swimmer.

My parents both thought of doing Dynamic Spin Release with me to take all the fear away from me. While I was doing the spinning with my dad he asked me what my gift was, and what I saw was that I could be a champion because my gift was a Gold Medal.

I felt like I was in the Olympics winning a gold medal, because I was in first place. Then my dad asked me if there was another gift, and then what I saw was this orange shiny flower, and it made me happy. Now whenever I am sad or feel blue, I can think of that flower and then I become happy.

After we were done with the spinning I started to cry because all my fear was gone. Before I knew the spinning process, I had a little voice in my head that said “oh no you can’t do this”. Now with the spinning process I know I can do anything I want!

What are these gifts Sharon received and where do they come from? – A brief commentary by Kris Hallbom

Although these archetypal images are common to humanity, the significance of a particular archetype to the individual person is specific: thus, the archetype can often appear as a healing symbol or metaphor such as a flower, a shining star, or a golden pathway– which is exactly what the person needs at that moment in their life.

“We come spinning out of nothingness, scattering stars like dust.” – Jalâluddin Rumi, the Persian Poet

The whole idea of spinning one’s problems away, is an ancient one that dates back to the 12th century Sufi tradition of Sufi Spinning– which is a trance like dance ritual that is still practiced today by the Whirling Dervishes.

Throughout history, dervishes have been known as sources of wisdom, medicine, poetry and enlightenment. The great poet, Rumi, practiced, the tradition of Sufi Spinning, and most of his poetry was inspired through this mystical form of dancing.

Spin Massage – A quick way to relieve your aches and pains

I was in London, England working on a film project for a DVD series on Dynamic Spin Release. Tim and I decided to invite a small audience in to watch us film, and to volunteer as demonstration subjects. A woman in the audience, named Anne, had a sore throat that day and kept coughing during the filming. Normally the coughing wouldn’t bother me, but because we were filming, it became an issue with the film crew.

Fortunately, Anne was trying her best to not cough so loudly, and eventually the coughing stopped altogether. At the end of the day when we were done filming, Anne told us that she had done some spinning with herself, to get herself to quit coughing…

“As I was watching you and Tim work with the other audience members, I kept massaging the lymph node on the right side of my neck. Interestingly, I was massaging it in a circular motion that was going clockwise. At first, I didn’t even realize I’d been massaging my neck, because I had been doing it unconsciously to comfort myself, she said.

“But the more I massaged it, the worse I felt. It suddenly occurred to me that I was massaging it in the wrong direction, and I needed to reverse the direction of how I was massaging it. As soon as I did this, my throat immediately felt better, and I didn’t cough anymore after that, or for the rest of the day!” she said with a smile of her face.

It became clear to Tim and I that Anne must of released something as a result of massaging her neck. Because she had looked so sick when she first walked in the room that day, and now she no longer appeared to be sick. Instead of looking pale and white, she had more color in her face and a sparkle in her eye. She also seemed more present and associated into her body, and she was standing more upright. And most important of all… she hadn’t coughed for the last half of the filming!

Spinning away her sister’s backache…

A couple of days later, we saw Anne and she had another interesting spin-massage story to tell us. The first thing she noted was that her sore throat and cough had not returned since the filming that day. She then told us how she used the spin massage technique to help her sister out. “My sister called me the other night when I got home from the filming project, and was complaining about her sore back. So I told her how to do the spin massage on her back, and the pain immediately disappeared. My sister couldn’t believe how fast it worked! She was absolutely stunned,” said Anne.

“All I did was have her put her hand on her back where the pain was, and then identify which direction it was spinning. As soon as she did this, I told her to massage the pain in the opposite direction, and to continue massaging it in a circular motion until the pain went away. What’s amazing to me is that we were able to do this on the phone, and it worked so quickly. I’m really glad I was able to help my sister,” she said.

Massaging your headaches away…

About a week later, I flew back to San Francisco. And the day after I got home, I had a little headache. I identified where the pain was in my head, and the direction of the spin. I then massaged it in the opposite direction until the pain went away. While I was massaging it, I also kept visualizing the pain leaving my head and imagined a golden light of healing energy filling the space where I was massaging. I couldn’t believe how fast the spin massage technique worked!

A horrible cramp in his foot and how he twirled it away…

I was out walking with a friend one day and he got a horrible cramp in his foot, and we had to stop walking because he was in so much pain. I watched him as he stood there trying to stretch out the cramp in his foot. I noticed that he kept twirling his foot around in a circular motion to work out the cramp. But his efforts didn’t seem to be working, and I seriously thought about calling a taxi, because he couldn’t walk.

However, it suddenly occurred to me that he had been twirling his foot in a clockwise motion– and that if he rotated it in the opposite direction, it might might make a positive difference. So I asked him to gently rotate his foot in the opposite direction going counterclockwise, and to notice if that made a difference in his level of pain. He started twirling his foot counterclockwise, and within 10 seconds of doing that, the pain was gone! We didn’t have to call a taxi after all, and we were able to continue on with our afternoon walk.
